You have finally finished your manuscript and are looking for the next right step, and you feel the information overload. I’m here to help!
I currently offer copyediting and proofreading services for authors.
COPYEDITING INVOLVES:
– editing for spelling, grammar, syntax, and punctuation, using Chicago Manual of Style and Merriam-Webster
– checking and editing for continuity in the timeline, locations, and character traits (Did the bakery stay across the street from the library according to its description in chapter 2? Did your main suspect’s eye color change in chapter thirteen?)
– light fact-checking (Is that city in Pennsylvania spelled correctly? Did Google exist in 1998?)
– creating a style sheet, which is a resource document to ensure consistency across the manuscript or book series (this is where I list all those continuity details and grammar and spelling choices!)
I will copyedit your manuscript in a Microsoft Word doc with Tracked Changes so you can review and accept or reject any revision I have made to your story.
PROOFREADING INVOLVES:
– checking and correcting typos, spelling, punctuation, and formatting errors, using Chicago Manual of Style and Merriam-Webster
I will proofread your manuscript in a PDF or a Word doc with Tracked Changes for you to review.
PROCESS:
I offer free 1,000-word sample edits to evaluate the level of editing that you need and give you an idea of what my services will look like. I also offer a free 15-minute discovery call to discuss the project in more detail and answer any questions you may have.
I never want to charge for editing services on a manuscript that would first benefit from earlier editing steps (like developmental / structural editing). If we determine that to be the case after talking, I am happy to point you towards some other colleagues for developmental and line editing services so that you spend your publishing budget wisely.
RATES:
I charge by the project, but my rates typically fall within $.011–$.015 per word for copyediting and $.009 per word for proofreading.
For example, a copyedit for an 80,000-word manuscript would cost between $880 and $1200. A proofread for an 80,000-word manuscript would cost $720.
That’s a big range, which is why I offer a free sample edit and estimate so that you know exactly what you will pay before you commit.
And truly—no pressure.
I hate feeling pressured to go with a specific company or service, and I never want
my clients to feel that way! Every author needs to find the
best fit for them and their story.
When you’re ready to move forward, you will receive a service agreement and invoice with the proposal of work and total cost.
You’ll pay a 20% non-refundable booking deposit to secure your spot on my schedule, a 30% (of total cost) payment due at the beginning of the project, and remaining 50% balance due upon delivery of your edited project.
