Sample edits are a great way to get a vibe check about an editor you’re considering. But how do you evaluate a sample edit to determine if the editor is a good fit?
In the list below, I’ve outlined some criteria for you to utilize in the vetting process. I recommend getting at least three sample edits from three different editors, if you can. Being able to compare will help you determine what matters most so you can feel confident when you make your decision!
Turnaround time
- Was the editor clear about turnaround time for the sample edit?
- Did they send back the sample edit within the time frame they said they would?
Process
- Does the editor provide a contract or service agreement?
- Do they outline the scope of work for the project based on the sample edit?
- Do they communicate how payment will be handled?
Tone
- Are the queries (comments) professional?
- Is the general tone polite and kind?
- Do you feel as if they are providing their expertise in a collaborative way? Or do you feel bulldozed? Or on the other end, do you feel love-bombed?
Thoroughness
- Do you feel comfortable with the amount of revisions the editor made?
-
Did the editor explain their reasons for suggesting a change? Not every revision needs an explanation, but revisions that may be more based on style or preferences should be explained in a comment in the margin.
-
Did they provide a style sheet?
This is not an exhaustive list for a copyedit, and it also does not necessarily mean an editor must meet all standards perfectly. But as you choose an editor, these are some good things to take note of. Your editor should be professional AND someone you enjoy working with.
