Why Authors Might Pay for a Beta Reader

Beta reading is quality feedback from a “test reader” in your target audience. A beta reader will read the entire manuscript and provide feedback. Sometimes an author will have specific questions they want the reader to address in the beta reader report.

For example, an author may want to know if the twist ending surprised the reader, or if they totally expected it to happen.

Beta readers are not essential to the publishing process! But I personally think they can be extremely helpful for the author. Some authors look for beta readers after the initial round of writing and self-editing because they want to get feedback from an outside reader before moving to the next publishing stage.

Many authors utilize a writer critique group or connect with free beta readers—and that’s great! In fact, please try that first! But a lot of authors get ghosted by free beta readers or don’t get the detailed feedback they’re looking for. Other authors don’t have a critique group.

Here’s where a paid beta reading service comes in.

I deliver a beta reader report with my notes on plot points, pacing, character impressions, any sensitive topics or biased language, and overall reading experience. I start all my beta reader reports with a list of things I *loved* about the book, because I want the author to also feel encouraged about the story they have crafted!

I ask every author to sign a service agreement that I also sign. The service agreement outlines what the beta reading service involves and provides reassurance that I will not show any part of their manuscript to anyone else. I also note in the service agreement that I never use generative AI software in any form.

Ideally, an author can get three to five beta readers (free or paid) and will be able to take note of anything that seems to be consistently reported by the beta readers.

For example:
If an author gets five beta readers, and four out of the five mention getting confused in the middle about the main character’s choices, the author will know that this may be an issue they need to correct, because it likely means that future readers will have the same experience.

TL;DR

Paid beta reading is not necessary, but it’s a fantastic option for some feedback from readers before you move to the next phase of publishing. Every author I’ve had the opportunity to beta read for has been so appreciative of the thorough feedback they receive and are able to use it to get their story where they want it to be.
